A Paw-sitive Choice for Your Puppy's Future

Bringing home a new puppy is one of life's greatest joys. Many puppies come with temporary insurance arranged by the breeder, but that doesn't mean it's the best option for you.

Choosing the right pet insurance is an important decision. The policy you take out now could remain with your dog for many years, and the difference between providers can add up to thousands of pounds over your pet's lifetime.

By comparing cover and selecting a policy that suits your needs, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing your puppy is protected from the very beginning.

Give Your Puppy The Cover It Deserves

The cost of your pet insurance is influenced by several factors, including your puppy's breed, location, overall health, and the level of veterinary fee cover you choose.

All of our policies provide Lifetime Cover, giving you ongoing protection year after year. This means that when you renew your policy, your full veterinary fee limit is restored.

For example, if you choose £8,000 of annual vet fee cover and claim £4,000 during your first policy year, you'll have a fresh £8,000 limit available again when your policy renews. As long as you maintain continuous cover, your vet fee allowance is reinstated each year, helping to protect your dog throughout their lifetime.

This ensures that if your dog develops an ongoing or recurring condition, you'll continue to have access to the cover they need when they need it most.

Pre-existing conditions, What you need to know

Because We Specialise in Pet Insurance We Realise That No Two Dogs Are the Same

Every puppy is unique, and even minor health issues can have a significant impact on their future insurance cover.

For example, some puppies develop a low-grade heart murmur that simply requires routine monitoring and may never cause any serious problems. However, if you take out insurance or switch providers after the condition has been recorded in your puppy's veterinary records, many insurers may exclude it from cover. In some cases, they may also exclude related conditions, potentially affecting future claims connected to your dog's heart health.

At Top Dog Cover, we take a straightforward approach. When you request a quote, we'll carefully review the information you provide and let you know immediately if we're unable to offer cover for your puppy. That means no surprises, no hidden exclusions, and no uncertainty about where you stand.

Our goal is to help you find the right protection for your puppy from the very beginning, so you can move forward with confidence.

Puppies Will Be Puppies - And Vet Bills Can Be Costly

Puppies explore the world with endless curiosity, and often with their mouths. While their growing bodies are remarkably flexible, it only takes one leap from a bed, sofa, or garden wall that's a little too high to result in an unexpected injury.

Unfortunately, veterinary treatment in the UK can be expensive, with even routine investigations and treatments quickly adding up.

That's why we recommend arranging high-quality pet insurance as early as possible. Having the right cover in place from the start can help protect your puppy against life's inevitable mishaps, giving you peace of mind and helping to ensure that the cost of treatment never stands in the way of their care.

If the date of collection is brought forward just let us know. The only thing we can't do is provide retrospective cover, so it's important to tell us on or before the day. This can be via a message on the existing client section of our website, voicemail or email.

How Much Do I Have To Pay When Making A Claim?

Choose an excess that works for you

With Top Dog Cover, you can choose your own policy excess, from £100 to £500, to help tailor your cover to your budget.

The excess is the amount you contribute towards a claim before your insurance pays the remaining eligible costs. To keep things simple, you'll only pay one excess per policy year, regardless of how many claims you make for the same condition.

In some circumstances, an excess may not apply, and we'll clearly explain any exceptions during the quote process.

Depending on the policy selected, a co-payment may also apply. This is a fixed percentage of each claim that you contribute alongside your excess. Any co-payment details will be clearly outlined before you purchase your policy, so you'll always know exactly what's covered and what you'll be expected to pay.

A Fair and Transparent Approach to Renewals

At Top Dog Cover, we like to keep our renewal process simple and straightforward.

If you haven't made a claim during your policy year, your renewal premium will typically be in line with what a new customer would pay for the same level of cover, and in some cases may even be a little lower as we believe in rewarding customer loyalty.

While we can't guarantee prices for future years, as factors such as inflation, increasing veterinary costs, and wider underwriting conditions can influence premiums across the insurance market, we're committed to treating our customers fairly.

Our aim is to ensure that loyal policyholders continue to receive competitive pricing and good value, giving you confidence that you're getting the protection your dog needs at a fair price.
